This Gives Me Claustrophobia Just Watching

Posted by superjennyc on April 22, 2008

Click this link to see a very condensed version of a man named Nicholas White who was trapped in an elevator for 41 hours. It appears that the elevator got caught between floors, because he could open the doors but could not escape. I actually became short of breath upon watching it…it is quite crazy, check it out!

France is Going to Fine People who Promote Anorexia!

Posted by superjennyc on April 15, 2008

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080415/ap_on_re_eu/france_anorexia

French parliament’s lower house adopted a groundbreaking bill Tuesday that would make it illegal for anyone — including fashion magazines, advertisers and Web sites — to publicly incite extreme thinness. This body image law includes pro-anorexic sites, pictures, ads, everything! The bill was the aftermath of the death of an anorexic Brazilian model. The international fashion industry is finally addressing the consequences of being ultra-thin. Fines can be up to $47,000!!! Good for them!

Save WATER!

Posted by superjennyc on April 9, 2008

http://www.showersmartfaucet.com/gallons.html

This website is pretty awesome. It is for a company that sells “smart” shower faucets. Somehow, in ways that I cannot explain (but the site probably can), it wastes less water than a regular faucet in the shower. The link I gave above calculates how many gallons of water one household uses per day/week/month (you put in how many minutes each person in the house showers), and it shows how many gallons everyone uses per month. Then in the other column it shows how many less gallons the household could use with a shower smart faucet.

The link to buy a faucet like this:

I love this website! You can basically find any job’s salary according to location. You can also search jobs themselves, by title (Ph.D, Masters, B.A., etc), or by trend.

Second Hand Smoke Causes Decreased Lung Function

Posted by superjennyc on April 8, 2008

http://www.unisci.com/stories/20022/0523021.htm

This article details the effects of second hand smoke, specifically on women. In a study done of more than 10,000 adults, women showed a greater susceptibility to decreased lung function when exposed to second hand smoke. The women with the most decreased lung function was seen in those with asthma, however, women were affected more greatly than men in most cases. This can even occur in short term situations….so STOP SMOKING!

I personally hate hate hate it.

Free Internet Radio…Tailored for YOU.

Posted by superjennyc on April 5, 2008

Being a music-lover, this is by far one of the coolest websites I have found to date. Pandora.com is a website that allows you to pick a song or artist that you love, and then the website creates a “radio station” for you according to your pick. You can make several radio stations, and add it to the site. It’s pretty amazing. And FREE.

As an example, I put in “Love Song,” by Sara Bareilles, and the site generated a playlist of songs by Gavin Degraw, Missy Higgins, Jack Johnson, and so on. It really is such a great site to broaden your musical horizons.

Website to Locate Sex Offenders by Name, Area

Posted by superjennyc on April 2, 2008

This is rather morbid and unsettling, but go to this website

…it’s a website that shows pictures, convictions, and where sex offenders live. You can search by specific name, area, and/or state by state. Although it is not the most comforting and enjoyable thing to do, it is a good idea to be aware and alert about one’s surroundings. More importantly, it is very good to know who is living near you….

I highly urge you to check it out.

I Don’t Want to Give this AWFUL Site Publicity but….

Posted by superjennyc on March 31, 2008

bimbo.jpg

MissBimbo.com. …. just boggles my mind. Not only is it the most degrading and ridiculous site for obvious reasons, it is geared for teenage girls (and much younger!) to play. It consists of reaching new levels by making a girl “look pretty” - through dieting, boob jobs, face lifts, etc. It promotes not working and finding a rich husband. The site actually just had to take off the “Take Diet Pills” option for the bimbos due to the negative response from the media. I think it is absolutely disgraceful that this type of garbage is available to young girls. There are so many people with eating disorders, body image, and self esteem issues in our world, and this is not helping!!

Here is the Cnn.com article accompanying it: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/03/25/miss.bimbo/

Red Wine, Good for the Heart?

Posted by superjennyc on March 31, 2008

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/03/050325222705.htm

red-wine.jpg

There have been numerous studies done about this, but this science daily article says that red wine may, in fact, be good for the heart. But of course — in moderation! Only 2 - 3 oz per day or less, or else the health benefits turn into negatives. The reason for the possible benefits of red wine is because it contains polyphenols. They are powerful anti-oxidants….but minus the alcohol. Polyphenols also are found in fruit, particularly berries, as well as green tea and chocolate. Anti–oxidants slow cell deterioration.

My only question is…what ABOUT the alcohol? Do the health benefits just cancel out because there is alcohol in red wine? Are these assumptions too hasty?

PS: Try to get organic wine when you can!!

Marry an Uglier Guy, You’ll Be Happier

Posted by superjennyc on March 24, 2008

….says Fox News.

marriage-cake.jpg

A study reported by FOXNews.com from the Journal of Family Psychology shows that women who marry less attractive men than themselves are happier in the long run. I’m assuming it’s due to the fact that ugly guys won’t stray because they know their wife is the best thing that ever happened to them. Or maybe because if you don’t have looks, you have to develop a personality, usually a pleasant one…

Ironically, however, studies show men usually marry women who are younger, prettier, and lower in socioeconomic status.

No wonder there are so many divorces these days!
